Project Overview

An InsurTech company offered drone insurance through a dated mobile app. The UX was clunky, visually inconsistent, and misaligned with the updated web platform. A full redesign was needed to improve usability, streamline policy management, and reflect the brand’s new direction.

Design Challenge

How can I redesign the mobile experience of an outdated drone insurance app to be intuitive, modern, and ready to scale?

User Context & Opportunity

Drone operators need fast, flexible insurance, but traditional solutions are slow and rigid. This revealed an opportunity to design a mobile-first experience that supports:

  • Short-term coverage options tailored to real use cases

  • On-the-go policy management with minimal friction

  • Differentiation in a growing InsurTech market through intuitive UX

Target Audience

Professional Drone Operators, from photographers to pilots - using drones for film, delivery, education, and more. They need flexible and dependable insurance.

User Challenges in the Existing System

Complex Purchase Process

Users struggled to understand different coverage options.

Lack of Accessibility to Policy Information

Managing existing policies was cumbersome and required unnecessary steps.

Inconsistent User Experience

Discrepancies between the web and mobile experiences.

Unaddressed Empty States

Lack of clear guidance when no active policies existed.

Here’s an Analysis of UX/UI Issues in the Current Design:

Design Goals

Redefining the purchase process

Simplifying steps while maintaining transparency.

Improving the policy management experience

Providing clear access to policy details, modifications, and renewals.

Developing an effective Empty States strategy

Guiding users through actions when no active policies are present.

Redesigning the app’s navigation system

Enhancing discoverability of key features

Structured Flow & Navigation

Refined flow hierarchy, enhanced feature discoverability, and integrated progress indicators for a more intuitive user journey.

Intuitive UI

Improved ease of use for both novice and experienced users, increasing task completion rates.

Enhanced Policy Management

Improved scannability of policy details, modifications, and renewals, reducing user friction.

Effective Empty States

Increased engagement by providing clear guidance when no active policies are present.

User Flow

From First Interaction to Policy Management

To support both quick decision-makers and more cautious users, I designed a flow that lets people explore pricing before committing to sign up. The structure adapts to different insurance plans: hourly, monthly, or annual, each with its own behavior and requirements. The goal was to reduce friction early on and make the rest of the journey feel straightforward, whether the user is insuring a single flight or managing long-term coverage.

Key Design Solutions

Let Users See Pricing Before Signing Up

Before

Users couldn’t see any pricing or coverage options without signing up, which caused frustration and drop-offs.

After

Users can now preview pricing before registration, reducing friction and building trust early in the experience.

Helping Users Choose the Right Plan Faster

Before

The screen required scrolling through all plans, making it hard to compare options or see what made each plan unique.

After

The new layout uses clear cards and visual tags to highlight key differences, making it easier to compare and choose the right plan quickly.

Simplifying Flight Zone Setup

Before

The old layout had minimal guidance, relied only on map interaction, and placed key actions in hard-to-reach areas.

After

The new flow introduces a clear step-by-step UI with a searchable address field and repositioned controls for better accessibility and ease of use.

Policy Customization Redesign

Before

The screen was dense and visually cluttered, making it hard for users to understand their options and make confident choices.

After

The redesigned layout organizes content into clear sections, adds real-time risk indicators, and improves readability.

Streamlining Policy Management

Before

Users could only view one policy at a time, with limited info. Managing multiple policies was confusing and hard to navigate.

After

The new layout introduces tabs, expandable sections, and clear labeling to simplify multi-policy management and improve overall clarity.

Guiding Users with Clear and Friendly Empty States

Instead of showing nothing, I designed illustrated empty states that add clarity, warmth, and keep users engaged even when there’s no data.

UI Style Guide Update

To support the app’s new brand direction, I designed a modern, scalable design system that replaced outdated UI patterns and set a strong foundation for future development. It includes updated components, accessible colors, refined typography, and full support across screen sizes and mobile platforms.

Final Design & Insights

Results & Insights

Early user testing showed a 20% faster purchase process compared to the existing system.

User satisfaction score of 8.7/10 in usability tests.

The new policy management screen reduced the number of actions needed to find information from 3+ to 2.

The framework allows easy expansion for additional insurance products in the future.

What I Learned…

1

Designing for insurance taught me how to simplify without dumbing things down - users still need full clarity, just with less friction.

2

Visual structure matters: showing complex info like coverage terms in a clean, digestible way can turn hesitation into action.

3

Thoughtful empty states aren't just nice to have. They guide users, build trust, and shape how the product feels in quiet moments.
